How the University and Colleges work

Colleges

Cambridge is a collegiate university, made up of 31 autonomous Colleges as well as the University’s Faculties and Departments.

The Colleges provide a home for students, pastoral support and small-group teaching. They also bring together students and academics from different disciplines.

Schools

The University’s academic work is organised through six Schools, which bring together related Faculties and other institutions.

The Schools are responsible for teaching and research in their subject areas and provide a framework for collaboration across the University.

Faculties and Departments

Cambridge’s Faculties and Departments are the principal centres for teaching and research. They provide the courses, facilities and academic communities that support the University’s work.

Non-School Institutions

A number of institutions contribute to the University’s teaching, research and wider public mission, including Cambridge University Press & Assessment and the Institute of Continuing Education.
